Food Pyramid – Snack Cast Episode 22

Good morning. Welcome back to Snack Cast. Today we’re gonna talk about how stupid our government officials can often be. Not really the topic, but it is highly controversial. We’re gonna have people that are gonna hate us after this, but that’s probably that’s okay. Today’s conversation is about the food pyramid, the food pyramid that we all grew up with. And now they call it my plate.gov.

I got a really big question before we jump into this whole thing. In the last 40 years since they have been giving people guidance on nutrition, have we gotten healthier or unhealthier?

My grandfather was never out of shape a day in his life. Not a day? I would definitely argue I don’t know the stats behind it. I’m sure you’re gonna drop something on me, but it’s probably not good. No, I’m not I don’t have any particular stats. But the average weight has just gone through the roof. And I don’t want to hear that. It’s a sedentary issue. It’s a sedentary ism, probably an ism. If that’s the thing, probably has a little bit to do with it. But I would tell you that a large majority is what we put in our mouths.

Activity levels definitely contribute. It’s got to be the most significant part. My gosh, man, when I was a kid, McDonald’s was like a once-a-month, treat after a ballgame. But dude, there’s one a mile from my house, and my kids who I think I’ve paid the mortgage there more than once. Oh, I know.

Let’s talk about the travesty of the original food pyramid. I like visuals. So just deal with it one day, we might get fancy and actually like put them up somewhere. But this is the original. From 1992 to 2005. This is what our government told us we should be eating. Load up on the grains and the pasta. The biggest block at the bottom was bread. I don’t know what science they followed or who they were listening to. But you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to know that it’s not good if bread is making up the majority of your diet. We’ve talked about gluten before.

Corn is the number one subsidy? What do you think number two is? Subsidy? Yes. Oh, gosh, soy or wheat? About $10 billion a year goes into the subsidy of wheat. So follow the money people. And who benefits from low wheat prices? Food manufacturers? For sure. Especially boxed right? Tons of money pumping from lobbyists to the wheat industry. Let’s create a product that is cheap and really not good for you.

There was a time when the world food supply was critical. That’s Biblical, right? Stores of wheat. But it was a different type of wheat. It’s gone from biblical to political. The bread in Jesus’s time isn’t the bread that we have today. In our estimate, it wasn’t fluffy. No wonder no wonder bread. So it’s progressed into some really interesting things fruits, grains, vegetables, and protein in dairy. When was the last time you ate a food name protein? Why not call it what it is? Fat, animal fats. Animal fats are what we need and fat from other things as well. I don’t mean you can get fat. I mean, you can eat fat.

There are really three primary foods and I’m not a dietitian, but they are protein, fiber, and carbs. But they don’t name it like that. I would probably make protein like half this plate. Easily half followed by the other quarter being vegetable right? Maybe take one pie and split it between fruits and grains. I think the point we’re getting at that we actually opened this entire snack cast with was we want to get you guys to do some research to look into it yourself. If you trust these ding-dongs.

Ask what you’re supposed to be consuming. Do your homework. The pyramid was broken, busted, and jive horrible advice. This is better, but it’s still missing some components. If the lipid hypothesis is dead and what I mean by that is the old heart healthy low fat diet. That is gone and out the window. There’s a lot of science demonstrating now that with carbohydrate restriction fats are very healthy for you. The problem is high carb high fat is a timebomb. Yes, it is. It is and that’s proven now. Yeah. All right. We’re out of time.

I hope you guys enjoyed this one. It’s one of those hot topics that just irritates Kevin and I when we see the stuff that officials push. Follow the money.

We appreciate you, keep moving.
