Exercise in the Morning or Night – Snack Cast Episode 8

We’re back. Good morning, welcome back to snack cast. Good to see you all. Today’s brief topic is when to workout. In the mornings or evenings and is one better than the other?

For me, I’m a morning guy, I wake up. I’m not a six-cup-of-coffee kind of guy, I roll out of bed. I hit the gym in the morning, and the feeling for me is I have to get it out of the way first thing. If I don’t get it out of the way. I won’t do it.

I’m a morning person. But a lot of people are afternoon and evening, there have been scientific studies around, is it better in the morning or evening?

But really, I would tell you that the best time is the right time for you. And it means that it’s right for you over a long period of time. From trendsetting to sustainable? It’s got to be sustainable. What I mean by that is, over the next six months, are you more likely to work out and get your workouts achieved in the morning? Or are you more likely to work out and get your workouts achieved in the evening? That is what is most important.

When are you most distracted? You and I, come from the same place, married, kids? after-school activities, all kinds of nonsense. It’s probably why you and I both are morning, people.

I get the occasional “Hey, will, you wake me up at five o’clock, I gotta do homework, or I got to study”. And there’s inevitably going to be things that get in the way. It doesn’t matter. If you’re working at night, and you’re working out of the evening, something’s going to disrupt that schedule. You need to be prepared for that. And that’s okay. Once in a while, something disrupts your schedule.

So ask yourself what part of your day is the most stable?  For me, that is predictable. Maybe that is a better word for me. That’s not the evening. There is no way, there are baseball practices, picking up kids from schools and honey-do lists that are a mile long, and dinners and all that stuff. Oh, we leave today at 430 to go to a soccer game over in Tampa. And it is an elimination win or go home. So all things being equal.

There are benefits to working out in the morning. The number one way you can get it out of the way, right? It’s less likely to get interrupted when you work out in the morning.

It can help you burn more fat, because when you wake up you don’t eat. You’re already on reserves.

A form of ketosis. You’re already starting to burn some of that fat. And then it can boost your mood.  What was the old Admiral from the Navy? It was  Navy Admiral William McRaven. If you’ve never seen his “make your bed”, it was a commencement speech or something. I think it was at the University of Texas Austin in 2014 ish.

He made a commencement speech about every day, start if you want to change the world, start by making your bed every day. And the point was you start with when you come home to when you get into a clean, fresh bed.

Maybe I’m hungry for my breakfast.

You know that you start your day with a win when you end your day with a win.

It’s just a very little change in behavior. And that mentality can go to working out in the morning. You’re already successful. Not to mention what else can the world throw at me today that I haven’t already handled? So evening workouts. If your life is less hectic, like you know, pre-childhood, whatever. I think also accountability partners.

A lot of the people I see work out in the evening. Have a buddy. Generally having a buddy or a trainer. We have Dimitri here. He has a large following that comes every day at five o’clock. 530. If you’re my workout, buddy, and it’s 5 am and you say you’re sleeping in then instantly I’m more likely to sleep in. He’s not going to be there. I’m not going to be there.

Your body temperature is warmer in the evening. The temperature outside is typically warmer.

You can blow off steam, you can take it out on your workout, So I had a hard day. I’m going to take it out right there. There is value in evening workouts.

The last one is replacing bad habits. What are you more likely to be doing in the evening, sitting on the couch snacking, or having a drink? That’s bad behavior. So when you swap that out for exercise, that is replacing bad habits with good ones.

if you’re the evening type, you’ll never get two workouts in one day.

The morning type is a chance if you have a terrible day. And you want to burn it off. You’re doubling up on your efforts.

But that’s it for today. We’re out of time. That’s it. We are actually overtime. So email your ideas. Snackcast@yes.fit. Thanks for tuning in, get those workouts in there.
